The Marquette men's and no. 28 women's cross country teams opened the season by taking home the victory on both sides at the 19th annual Bradley Open this afternoon at Detweiller Park in Peoria, Ill.
"This is the best my team has ever looked at this point in the year," head coach Dave Ulrich said.
The hot and humid conditions were not enough to slow down sophomore Kyle Saginus, who won the race on the men's side in a time of 25.01. The men also had strong finishes from Josh Pinter in 7th place with a time of 25.43, David Henderson 15th place a time of 26.23 and Drew Craig in 22nd place and a time of 26.38.
"He (Saginus) worked really hard this summer and this meet is an early indication that he is ready to step it up to another level," Ulrich said. "He beat some very good runners today."
The Marquette women swept the first seven places in the strongest performance Ulrich has ever seen.
"This was by far our most dominating performance since I've been coaching the women. We really dominated like we've never done before."
Michaela Courtney led the way for Marquette finishing 1st with a time of 17.42. Senior teammate Jodi Jakubek followed with a time of 17.46. Right behind her was Cassie Pellar (3rd, 17.53), Heidi Lindeman (4th, 17.58), Susie Edmond and Allison Sauer (5th and 6th, 18.00) and Shannon Oster (7th, 18.03).
"Michaela had a great summer of training and showed that she's ready to step it up to a much higher level than she was last year," Ulrich said.
The women's team took first place with a perfect score of 15 points. The men's team captured the victory with 33 points. Cross-town rival, UWM, placed 2nd on the men's side with 52 points and 3rd on the women's side with 89 points. Loyola of Chicago took home 2nd place on the women's side with 56 points.
