Women's Tennis Completes Play at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the 30th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic this afternoon after competition was moved indoors to the Western Racquet Club's indoor facility on Moorland Road due to thunderstroms. The Golden Eagles defeated UW-Green Bay 5-1 in singles play and swept Dayton in doubles action, 3-0.

Illinois State won the women's team title defeating Marquette, UW-Green Bay (7-0) and Dayton (7-0). The Golden Eagles ended the weekend capturing second place defeating UW-Green Bay (5-2) and Dayton (6-1) but falling to Illinois State (6-1).

The Golden Eagles won four of six singles matches en route to the victory over Green Bay. Beba Calbeto started things off for Marquette with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Green Bay's Heather Harding at no. 1 singles. Erin Watkins, Fran Bonnelly and Lisa Nguyen each followed with wins in their respective singles matches, with Watkins being the lone Golden Eagle to go undefeated on the weekend.

Dominkia Dabrowski fell to Aschley Jurgelta, 6-1, 6-0, and Andrea Bukacek lost to Amy Messiner, 6-1, 6-1, accounting for the Golden Eagles' two singles losses.

In doubles action, Marquette swept all three matches against Dayton to earn the doubles point. The no. 1 doubles tandem of Calbeto and Bonnelly cruised to an 8-1 win over Dayton's Allysa Detroy and Kara Metzger. The duo of Dabrowski and Watkins defeated Nicole Diubay and Megan Gray, 8-3, at no. 2 doubles, while Nguyen and Bukacek also won 8-3 over Carrie Trigilio and Kate Mellion at no. 3 doubles.

The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
