MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's tennis team was swept by the University of Wisconsin-Madison tonight at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium, 7-0. Their record drops to 7-5 on the dual match season.
The Golden Eagles played well in doubles but came up short at all three positions. The senior duo of Eigis Vedrickas and Ian Kawas lost by a close margin to Brennen Phippen and Gian Hodgson, 8-7(5). Pete Van Lieshout and Brett Binkley played the no. 1 spot, but fell to Nolan Polley and Jeremy Sonkin, 8-3, marking their first doubles loss of the spring season.
"Our guys are definitely disappointed tonight," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "This was a very disappointing loss for us. I thought our doubles energy was good tonight but our execution was poor. We had a chance to win those matches."
The tandem of Trent Hagan and Stephen Shao played at no. 3, but lost to Lachezar Kasarov and Elliot Bisnow, 8-5.
Marquette came out slow in singles and dropped the first point at five positions.
"Five of the six matches got off to slow starts in singles," Rodecap said. "When Wisconsin looks around at the other courts and sees they have the early lead, it fuels them."
Hagan struggled in the first set against Kasarov but came back in the second to tie five all. He was unable to win the match losing, 6-0, 7-5.
"I thought Trent did a good job of battling back. He played one of his worst matches of the year but was able to keep fighting it out," said Rodecap.
At no. 1, Vedrickas fell to the Badger's Sonkin, 6-4, 6-2. Greg Sirotek came up short in a tight first set against Hodgson at no.5, 7-5, and could not recover in the second losing 6-3.
"I give Wisconsin a lot of credit," Rodecap said, "they played really well tonight. We have to work on being composed players. It's a constant battle and I'm confident that we're going to get it. I think Eigis is competing better and if he continues to do that the rest of the guys will follow."
The Golden Eagles will take to the road next week, when they travel to South Carolina State, The Citadel and Illinois State.
