VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Marquette men's tennis team closed out their weekend on the road with a 6-1 win over the Wildcats of Villanova. Their record improves to 13-8 on the dual match season, 3-1 in the BIG EAST.
"Our guys did a good job because we were really tired coming into it," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "It was a quick turn around for us because we didn't finish until 11:00 p.m. in Rutgers and then had to drive to Philadelphia."
The Golden Eagles played without senior Eigis Vedrickas, resulting in a new doubles lineup and everyone moving up a position in singles.
Marquette was able to get the early point by winning at all three doubles positions. Brett Binkley and Pete Van Lieshout teamed up at no. 1 to defeat Dimitri Chimeraski and John Borden, 8-2. Ian Kawas and Eric Fleming got the win at no. 2, while Stephen Shao and Trent Hagan took care of no. 3.
"The lineup moved up today," Rodecap said. "Two freshman played one and three and got through their matches relatively comfortably and Greg won at six. We came out East to play three BIG EAST teams that we've never played before, so it was a good weekend for us."
The Golden Eagles will face the University of South Florida for their final Big East match-up before playing St. Leo. They will then head to the BIG EAST tournament where they will match-up to the top eight teams.
"I am really starting to feel we are playing together as a team and it was a good weekend for us. We want to be playing good this time of the year," said Rodecap.
