Men's Tennis Falls to Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO - Despite a win from freshman Stephen Shao, the Marquette men's tennis team lost, 6-1, to No. 45 Western Michigan today at Sorenson Courts in Kalamazoo, Mich. Their record drops to 10-8 on the season.
"We won at third doubles and had chances at no. 2," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We were not able to take advantage of some opportunities. Western Michigan played really well. They are a good team and their results have been very good all year."
The only doubles victory came from the team of Stephen Shao and Trent Hagan at no. 3, when they defeated the Bronco's Jeff French and Tim Bradshaw, 8-6.
The Golden Eagles were not able to recover from the 1-0 deficit, losing the first four matches to finish.
"In singles they went out and beat us quickly at a few spots," Rodecap said. "I think Shao is playing better and he was able to get a win for us at no. 4. Trent had a close match and is continuing to improve. Ian played a really good first set and lost in a tiebreaker. As a team, I think we are starting to compete better. We are playing better doubles and we walked away from today feeling that we are continuing to improve."
Shao's victory came when he defeated Kevin Hayward, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). Hagan fell at no. 2 to Western Michigan's Bradshaw, 7-5, 6-3. Senior Ian Kawas was not able to overtake Jose Orozco at no. 2, losing 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
With the win the Broncos improve their record to an impressive 21-3.
Marquette will head out east next weekend to take on BIG EAST opponents, Georgetown, Rutgers, and Villanova.
