Marquette Competes at Big Blue Classic

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Marquette men's and women's track teams competed at the 2006 Big Blue Classic, held at Eastern Illinois on April 7-8.
"The weather was tough for the meet today and definately affected some finishes." said head coach Dave Uhrich. "The first day was warm and humid, more than we're used to, and the next day was completely different. The wind affected the 10k quite a bit."
There was a Marquette 1-2-3 finish in the 800m, as Michaela Courtney won the race (2:13.97), followed by Cassie Peller (2:14.93) and Kristina Malin (2:15.31).
"It was an exciting 800m for our team. All three (Courtney, Peller, and Mailn) are good middle-distance runners and I thought they'd push each other and could do a top 3 finish." stated Uhrich.
Terri Emond won the 3,000m steeplechase, crossing the line in a time of 11:09.40, while Alli Sauer captured the 10,000m run in a time of 38:10.51. Colleen Kuenster was fourth in 40:42.60. Heidi Lindeman was second in the 5,000m run, in a time of 18:11.85. Lauren Chmielewski was fourth in the 400m hurdles, in 1:10.54. Tara Hinke was fifth in the 1,500m (4:48.15).
Christina Flowers was sixth in the 100m dash, 12.67, while also placing fifth in the long jump with a 17'5 1/2" (5.32m) performance. The 4x800m relay team won their race, registering a time of 9:02.47, while the 4x400m team was third in 4:01.70.
Jessica Ehlen was second in the hammer, with a toss of 174'5" (53.17m) and also finished fifth in the discus (132'7"/40.41m). Kristin Stoniecki placed fourth in the pole vault, in 10'11 3/4" (3.35m). Carrie Schmid was sixth (10'11 3/4"/3.35m). Annie Dwyer and Lana Rabas tied for third in the high jump, each clearing 4'11" (1.50m).
Other Marquette Finishers: javelin: 7. Amy Stoniecki, 111'1" (33.85m), 12. Audra Ketelsen, 104'10" (31.95m); hammer: 8. Jenna Mahaffey 149'6" (45.58m); 400m: 10. Lauren Chmielewski, 1:02.19; 200m: 10. Christina Flowers, 26.67; 1,500m: 7. Kaitlyn Chambers, 4:53.25; discus: 7. Audra Ketelsen, 130'7" (39.80m), 10. Jenna Mahaffey, 112'10" (34.40m); pole vault: 9. Liz Wilkie, 10'0" (3.05m); shot put: 9. Jenna Mahaffey, 39'4 1/2" (12.00m), 11. Jessica Ehlen, 38'0" (11.58m).
On the men's side, Kyle Saginus finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase, in a time of 9:25.42. Tom Cassady was fourth in the 400m, in 49.68. Jed Burey finished sixth in the 800m, clocking 1:53.81. Brent Des Roches was fourth in the 1,500m in 3:57.52.
The Golden Eagles' 4x400m (3:19.79) and 4x800m (7:50.32) relay teams finished third in their respective races, while the 4x100m squad was fourth (43.10m).
Ray Bratchett won the high jump, clearing 6'6 3/4" (2.00m). Matt Piekarski was second in the long jump, with a leap of 22'10 1/2" (6.97m). Zach Pawlowski was third in the pole vault, with a 15'1" (4.60m) performance.
Andy Ballard was fifth in the shot put, tossing it 50'2 1/2" (15.30m), while placing sixth in the discus 154'0" (46.94m). Damian Anisko was sixth in the hammer, with a heave of 168'4" (51.30m). Matt Piekarski was fifth in the javelin, registering a throw of 169'9" (51.73m).

"I felt like we had a pretty good meet, it would have been even better if the weather had cooperated." Uhrich added. "We're trying to continue to get BIG EAST qualifying marks, but the weather is what you expect this time of year. It was a good tuneup before we head out to California next week."
MU will compete in the Mt. SAC Relays and Pomona-Pitzer Invitationals next week in the Golden State.
