Golden Eagles Compete at Illini Open

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Marquette men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Illini Open this afternoon in their first competition of the 2006 season. The meet did not have team scores.
For the Golden Eagles, Cassie Peller and Jayne Grebinski finished 1-2 overall, respectively. Peller's winning time was 14:11.44 for the four-kilometer course. Grebinski was close behind, clocking 14:12.00. Heidi Lindeman was fourth overall (14:25.18), while Anna Weber was seventh (14:41.20).
The trio of Kaitlyn Chambers (14:56.17), Amanda Beggs (14:57.37), and Nina Hoppenjan (14:58.07) crossed the finish line 10-11-12, respectively.
Other Marquette women's finishers: 32. Colleen Kuenster, 15:40.36; 46. Beth Pollard, 16:22.85;
On the men's side, MU's Scott Mueller (18:20.00), Kyle Saginus (18:23.89), and Brent Des Roches (18:24.61) finished 2-3-4, respectively, on the six-kilometer course. Jeremy Williams was 11th (18:46.65), while Josh Pinter (19:04.60) was 20th.

"It was definitely a very good first meet." said head coach Dave Uhrich. "Certainly Cassie picked up where she left off last season with a good solid run to win it. And I was also happy with Jayne's run, in her first collegiate race. All of the freshmen ran well this afternoon."
"On the men's side, we had a good pack of runners that kept moving up." Uhrich added. "Scott, Kyle, and Brent ran together throughout and kept picking people up along the way into the top four."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Sept. 15 at the National Catholic Invitational, held at Notre Dame.
