The Marquette men's and women's cross country team returns to action this afternoon, when they travel to Notre Dame, Ind. for the 27th Annual National Catholic Championship. The races will be held on the campus of Notre Dame.
The first varsity race of the day will feature the #18 ranked women's squad. The five-kilometer race, featuring 34 prominent Catholic institutions from around the country, will begin at 3:15 p.m. While the Golden Eagles are the lone ranked team in the field, head coach Dave Uhrich feels the host Notre Dame might have the edge on its home course. Last season, the Irish captured the 2005 BIG EAST Championship.
"With it being on their home course and the success that they have had the past few years, Notre Dame is the favorite for both the men and women." Uhrich explained. "But we are looking to challenge them as much as possible."
Today's race will also serve as the season debut for MU All-American Michaela Courtney. She did not race in the Golden Eagles' season opener at the Illini Open on Sept. 1.
On the men's side, Marquette will also be looking to challenge for team honors. Notre Dame, ranked 12th in the country, tops the 32-team field. With a solid run, the Golden Eagles should break into the top 10 on the USTFCCCA Great Lakes regional poll. MU is coming off a solid run at the Illini Open on Sept. 1 and a good, solid two weeks of workouts.
"We are looking forward to getting the season underway with our first scored meet. Our workouts have been going well and I think we are ready to run a good race. This will be a good early season test for us to see where we are at."
