MUNCIE, Ind. - Juniors Pete Van Lieshout and Greg Sirotek teamed up to win the Flight C Doubles Championship on Saturday while Niko Boulieris and Stephen Shao captured the Flight B Championship today at the Ball State Fall Tennis Invitational in Muncie, Ind.
"I felt like our guys did a really good job today," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Shao and Niko made a lot of first serves and are playing at a high level. Our doubles can still get better but we are making progress."
Shao and Boulieris took down Bradley's Matt Metully and Evgeng Samoylov, 8-4.
"Some guys were pretty good this weekend but there are still areas we need to work on," Rodecap said. "Pete and Greg won the Flight C Doubles Championship. They beat a team from Illinois State, which I was really pleased about."
Van Lieshout and Sirotek took down ISU's Tim Link and Michael Hobson.
Trent Hagan played in the Flight A singles semifinal round but fell short to Butler's James Low.
"Trent lost a really tough match to a really good player from Butler," said Rodecap. "He won the first set lost the second and had a match point in the third to close it out but his opponent came up with a huge volley. When you play in a third set, really anything can happen."
"Niko lost in a match breaker to another freshman from Butler. That's a match that he needs to be able to win. He won the first set fairly easily so he needs to learn to close that match out. So that's something we'll continue to work on."
The Golden Eagles will be back in action next weekend when they host the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and the Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wis. Play gets underway Friday at 9:00 a.m. as Marquette faces BIG EAST for DePaul.
