Marquette Freshmen Perform Well At Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The men's tennis team opened day one of the 31st Milwaukee Tennis Classic playing DePaul in singles and Boston College in doubles. The tournament is being held at the Western Raquet Club in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.
"I felt like our young guys did a really good job today," said head coach Steve Rodecap of freshmen Niko Boulieris and Mark Rutherford. Each earned themselves a singles victory. Rutherford had a two set win over Jack Komar of DePaul, 6-4, 7-5, while Boulieris needed three sets to take care of Jose Moncada, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. "They really carried us today and both played good matches."
Sophomore Trent Hagan got the third and tying win against the Blue Demon's George Wang, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Junior Pete Van Lieshout also earned a victory at no. 7 exhibition match, taking down Chris Nowak, 6-4, 7-6(2).
"Some of our older guys had trouble closing out matches today," said Rodecap. "They need to really elevate their game and learn to get the win. We'll make some changes going into tomorrow."
In doubles, Brett Binkley and Rutherford came out strong at no. 1, beating BC's Soma Kesthely and Sam Wagner, 8-4. Despite an early 4-3 lead, Stephen Shao and Boulieris could not hold on at no. 3, losing, 9-7. Van Lieshout and Hagan were down early in the match at no. 2 and never regained their momentum, falling to Brian Garber and Brian Hartness, 8-5.
"Brett and Mark play really well at no. 1," said Rodecap. "Give Boston College a lot of credit. They played very scrappy today and had good doubles. I think our guys will respond well tomorrow and are eager to get back out there and play."
