MILWAUKEE -- Three Marquette women's soccer players earned weekly honors from the BIG EAST Conference, it was announced today.
Allison Mallams was named BIG EAST offensive player of the week. Her two gamewinning goals this past weekend paced Marquette to a 2-0 record in BIG EAST play. Mallams found the back of the net in the 108th minute of double-overtime at home on Friday, Sept. 22 against #12 Connecticut. She also tallied the deciding goal in a 2-0 victory at Providence on Sunday, Sept. 24. She has a team-leading six goals for the Golden Eagles this season.
Laura Boyer was named BIG EAST goalkeeper of the week. She posted two shutout victories this weekend, both in BIG EAST play. Boyer stopped two shots en route to a double-overtime victory over #12 Connecticut at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. At Providence, Boyer played close to 79:00 in a 2-0 shutout win. She made three saves. For the season, Boyer has registered five shutouts.
Michelle Pitzl was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll. Her outstanding play in the Marquette defense helped lead to the team's two consecutive shutout victories in BIG EAST play this past weekend. The senior defender helped limit #12 Connecticut to just three shots on-goal, while at Providence, Pitzl's solid play in the defensive backfield limited the Friars to just five shots on-goal.
"It was an important weekend for our team and Laura, Michelle and Allison played an important role in our victories over Connecticut and Providence." head coach Markus Roeders said. "Laura made some key saves in both games and continues to show why she is among the top goalkeepers in the country. Michelle is our senior leader in the defensive line and it is incredible how much ground she covers on both ends of the field. Allison is always dangerous and has the ability to score or create at any time. Overall, we have to praise the entire team because individual players get recognized when the team plays well."
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend, when they play a pair of conference matches in New Jersey. MU will face Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 29 before taking on Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 1.
