TULSA - Sophomore Trent Hagan won in the first round of qualifying at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma today. Hagan received a second round bye which advances him to the third round of competition that takes place tomorrow at 11 a.m.
"Trent played a sloppy first set," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "When you do that at this level you put yourself at risk. But to his credit he came back and was able to raise his level of play. He's playing at a good level right now, so it will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow."
Hagan defeated Arturro Navaro of Nebraska in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. He will play the winner of Memphis' Benedict Fisher and San Antonio's Robin Fernandes.
The Golden Eagle's Mark Rutherford came up short against TCU's Kriegler Brink, 6-2, 6-4, while teammate, Brett Binkley lost to Arizona State's TJ Bellama, 6-3, 6-3.
"Mark and Brett lost to good players but that's the level were trying to get to," said Rodecap. "I felt like they went out and competed pretty well."
