MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette men's tennis team is set to open the 2007 dual match season when they take to the road to face #32 Michigan on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. CT at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Golden Eagles finished 16-10 and 4th in conference play during their inaugural season in the BIG EAST. With an even tougher schedule in 2007, Marquette looks to work their way to the top of this competitive conference.
"We are really looking to build on last year," assistant coach Raj Gill said. "We had success last year with some good wins and we finished off the season really strong. We are returning the core of our team and added some strength with the new freshman. The returning guys are more mature and the freshmen are mature for their age which is going to help us as well."
With the no. 2 ranked doubles team of Brian Hung and Matko Maravic and two national singles rankings, the Michigan Wolverines will be a good challenge for the Golden Eagles.
"They are high in the rankings," Gill said. "We have several matches this year where we play pretty good teams and we see those as opportunities. This opportunity comes for us right off the bat. We have to see it as an opportunity to go out there and try and catch them. We are coming off a good week of practice and the guys are excited. They are hungry to get started with season."
Marquette will play their first home match against the University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, January 27 at. 2 p.m.
