West Lafayette, IN - The Marquette University men's tennis team competed in both singles and doubles action at the 2007 Purdue Fall Invitational, advancing in the main draw of several flights.
Junior Stephen Shao, returning to action for the first time in several weeks because of injury, advanced in the Flight "B" draw with a pair of victories. Shao downed Reinoud Haal of Iowa 6-3, 7-5 before defeating Chris Herron of Butler 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. He will face J.P. Ritchie of Iowa for the championship Sunday morning.
Also posting singles wins Saturday were Dusan Medan, Mark Rutherford, Brett Binkley and Graydon Klassen.
The doubles tandem of Rutherford and Binkley advanced to the semifinals of the Flight "A" bracket with an 8-5 victory over a squad from Iowa. Shao and sophomore Niko Boulieris will play another Iowa squad in the Flight "B" semis after posting an 8-2 win over Brandon Bayliss and Sam Brown of Butler.
Play in both singles and doubles resumes Sunday morning.
