Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team will face the region's top talent this weekend at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament, hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The event begins with qualifying matches on Thursday and concludes with the semifinals and finals on Monday. The singles finalists and doubles champions earn berths to the National ITA indoor championships Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.
"We have been preparing all fall for this weekend," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We have played a lot of matches against quality competition and the hope is those experiences pay off as the week progresses."
Seven of the nine members on the 2007-08 squad will be in competition this weekend. Senior Brett Binkley, sophomores Niko Boulieris and Mark Rutherford and junior Stephen Shao have all been placed in the qualifying draw and will have to earn a spot in the main flight. Junior Trent Hagan and sophomore Dusan Medan were awarded spots in the main draw and will await their opening-round opponents.
Qualifying singles play begins Thursday morning.
The Golden Eagles also placed three tandems in the doubles draw. Marquette duos of Binkley/Rutherford, Medan/Hagan and Shao/Pete Van Lieshout will take to the court this weekend in a hope to advance to the national tourney.
