Marquette Excels On First Day At Fall Invitational

Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team opened its second home event of the Fall campaign with a strong effort at the Marquette Fall Invitational Friday.
Competing in three flights of singles and two doubles draws, the Golden Eagles enjoyed a successful day in each of the five brackets.
Sophomore Dusan Medan posted a pair of victories in Flight "A" to earn a berth in the semifinals, as did classmate Niko Boulieris and senior Pete Van Lieshout in Flight "B." Senior Greg Sirotek was awarded an opening-round bye in Flight "C" and downed Brian Zaron of Green Bay 6-3, 6-2 for his semifinal appearance.
Medan dropped the first set in his opener against Prabowo Imanuel , but was able to rally for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory. He made quick work of Alex Friesen of Northern Illinois in the quarterfinals, winning 6-4, 6-2. Boulieris posted a pair of straight-set decisions, downing Eric Plaushines of Green Bay 6-1, 6-4 and Diego Zagarra-Ballon of Northern Illinois - 6-0, 7-5.
Van Lieshout enjoyed a quick win against Jorge Yunes (IUPUI) before rallying to advance. The senior dropped the first set, but came back for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Chris Herron of Butler.
Three of the remaining eight doubles spots in Flight "A" are occupied by Marquette tandems. Senior Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford were awarded a bye in the round of 16, while Niko Boulieris and Peter Van Lieshout posted an 8-6 win over a duo from Chicago State. Medan and junior Trent Hagan advanced following an 8-2 win over Gregory Sosa and Jorge Yunes of IUPUI.
With another doubles win by freshman Graydon Klassen and Sirotek in Flight "B," the Golden Eagles improved to 21-3 overall in doubles action on the year.
