Marquette falls, 3-0, to Villanova

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette volleyball team finished its conference season on Sunday, falling to Villanova, 3-0 (25-30, 31-33, 29-31).
Junior Ashlee Fisher led the Golden Eagles with 17 kills, hitting a .382 hitting percentage. Senior Kimberley Todd notched a double-double posting 13 kills and collecting 14 digs. Senior Jenn Brown netted 11 kills, while junior Terri Angst collected 20 digs. Senior Katie Weidner dished out 40 assists.
"Ashlee Fisher had a ridiculous game," head coach Pati Rolf said. "She really got a handle on the game, it was the best I've ever seen her play. We struggled offensively today and we need to work on elevating our blocking. Rabbecka Gonyo was awesome today too, she really helped us push in the second game."
MU fell behind 13-11 early in the first game, but used a 6-2 run to take a 17-15 lead and forced Villanova into a timeout. The Wildcats came out of the break and took a 19-18 lead and increased it to 24-21, as the Golden Eagles took a timeout. Serving for game point at 29-25, Villanova connected on a kill to earn the 30-25 victory. Todd slammed five kills in the first game.
Weidner served two consecutive aces to give MU a 2-0 lead, then consecutive blocks from Todd and Rabbecka Gonyo saw MU in front, 5-0. The Wildcats pushed to come within a point at 7-6, but jumped ahead, 10-7 following a kill. A service error from Villanova put MU within four points 17-13 and a block from Fisher and Brown took the score to 19-15. Fisher smashed a kill to put MU within two points, 20-18 and force Villanova to the sidelines for a timeout. The Wildcats went 3-1 following the break, and sent MU into a timeout. Brown slammed a kill after the break and a kill from Hailey Viola took Marquette within two points, 23-21. MU tied the score at 23 following a kill from Fisher that forced Villanova to the sidelines in its final timeout. The Golden Eagles took a lead at 25-23 as Todd and Fisher both connected on back-to-back kills. Villanova came back to tie the score at 27 each, as MU used its final timeout. Todd netted a kill to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 28-27, but Villanova tied again at 28. The Wildcats served for game point at 29-28, but served an error as MU tied at 29. The teams tied again at 30 and then 31, but Villanova took the second game, 33-31. Fisher slammed eight kills in the stanza.
The third game opened with Villanova taking a 5-2 lead, but MU came back within a point at 7-6. The Golden Eagles tied the score at 12, following a Villanova error and the Wildcats used a timeout. Brown slammed back-to-back kills to see MU tie the score at 15, and the teams traded points, until the Wildcats pulled ahead, 22-18. Marquette scored three unanswered, but called timeout when Villanova took the score to 23-21. Fisher connected on a kill putting MU within two points, but the Wildcats still held a 27-24 lead following a service error. Villanova served for match point at 29-26, but a kill from Julie Richards would hold them off. MU pulled within a point at 29-28, forcing Villanova to call timeout. The Golden Eagles tied the score at 29 on a block from Gonyo and Todd, but the Wildcats went in front, 30-29 serving for the match. Villanova earned the final game, 31-29.
The Golden Eagles will return to the court, hosting Maine and South Dakota State, in the Battle of the Bird on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24.
