Marquette's Indoor Track Season is Underway

The Marquette track and field team opened its 2007-08 indoor season on Friday evening. The Golden Eagles competed in the Blue and Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
"It was a typical December meet," head coach Bert Rogers said. "Overall we did pretty well for where we are in the season. It's exciting to have another month of training before competing again and I like where we are at right now."
Twelve MU athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Championships, while freshman Tyler O'Brien broke the school record in the 60 meter dash (6.94) and the 200 meter dash (21.98).
On the women's side Jenna Mahaffey qualified for the conference championship in the shot put (13.03m) and weight throw (17.15m). Rachael Thiel also qualified in the shot put (13.48m). Erynn James hit the BIG EAST standard in the high jump winning the event with a personal-best-tying 1.71m jump. Carrie Schmid qualified in the pole vault with a 3.55m jump.
For the men, Robert Bleem qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the shot put (14.87m). Nick Byum and Ray Bratchett also hit the BIG EAST Qualifying mark in the high jump and 200 meter dash respectively.
The Golden Eagles will have a month off before competing in the Badger Track Classic in Madison, Wis. on Jan. 12, 2008.
