HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Mike Van Sickle made it two-in-a-row for MU golfers.
The Marquette sophomore won medalist honors at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, giving MU the medalist in back-to-back tournaments this season. Freshman Ben Sieg won the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge in MU's last outing in November.
"I'm pleased with the way Mike played today to finish the tournament strong," head coach Tim Grogan said. "To have different winners in back-to-back tournaments says something about the depth of the team."
Van Sickle ran away from the field, shooting three-under, 213. He was the only golfer under par and won by five strokes over Ciaran McAleavey of Toledo.
Van Sickle's total put Marquette within range of a team crown, but a superior final round by Tenn.-Chattanooga gave the Moccasins the team title, 897-900 over second-place Marquette. UTC shot a tournament best 294 in the final round, while Marquette concluded the tournament with a 295.
"We wanted to be in a position to win the tournament and we did that. Chattanooga was a strong team today," Grogan added. "I'm happy with the second place finish, especially with the strong start we had yesterday."
After struggling in the first day of the tournament, junior Michael Bielawski put together an impressive final round to move up in the standings. Shooting a final-round 71 -- a total that matched Van Sickle's last 18 holes -- Bielawski moved up to a tie for 19th place at 13-over, 229.
Sieg, who was in the top three in the standings after 18 holes, slipped to 38th place, finishing at 18-over, 234. Sophomore Dustin Schwab placed 50th at 22-over, 238. Junior Ted Gray finished the Marquette scoring at 24-over, 240, in 57th place.
The Golden Eagles continue their east coast road trip with the Ron Smith/USF Invitational, a three day event set to begin on Friday, March 2 in Lake Jovita, Fla.
