HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Sophomore Mike Van Sickle has done what no other golfer in Marquette history has done.
By winning the Mission Inn Collegiate Invitational, Van Sickle won his third tournament of the season to tie a school record. All of Van Sickle's wins have come in the last three tournaments. No MU golfer had won three consecutive events.
"I can't explain how well he's playing right now," head coach Tim Grogan said. "He's playing as well as I've seen anyone play in my years as head coach."
Van Sickle won the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate and the Ron Smith/USF Invitational in the past two weeks.
Van Sickle trails Tom Uutala for career wins at Marquette. Uutala had six.
As a team, Marquette held on to third place. The Golden Eagles shot 18-over, 882 for the tournament, to tie for third with Wichita State. Louisville won the tournament at 860. UNC Greensboro placed second at 874.
Van Sickle shot a four-under, 212 to lead MU, winning the tournament by one shot over Nathan Stamey of UNC Greensboro.
Junior Ted Gray placed 25th, finishing at five-over, 221. Sophomore Dustin Schwab placed in a tie for 40th, shooting 10-over, 226. Junior Michael Bielawski was one stroke behind Schwab, finishing at 11-over, 227. Freshman Ben Sieg concluded the Marquette scoring at 17-over, 223, placing 64th.
Marquette's season continues on March 18 with the three-day, 54-hole Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
