MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette men's tennis team took down Southern Illinois, 5-2, tonight at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season.
Marquette got off to a good start, winning all three doubles positions. Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford took down Sergio Sanchez and Milos Stankovic at number one, 6-1, 7-5, improving to 6-3 on the season. Trent Hagan and Pete Van Lieshout defeated Lucas Waked and Felipe Villasenor, 8-5.
Taking the momentum into singles, Hagan earned a win over Sanchez at no. 1, 6-1, 7-5. Rutherford, Shao and Binkley secured the win for Marquette at the two, three and four spot.
"I thought Shao played really well today," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Trent was able to avenge a loss from last year to Sanchez so that was good."
Marquette will play against Wright State tomorrow at 4 p.m.
"Tomorrow it is important for us to get a win," Rodecap said. "We may change the lineup around a little bit and get Pete a match tomorrow. He's been playing really well for us in doubles"
