MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's and women's track & field teams will compete in their second meets of the outdoor season, Saturday, when the squads split, sending 40 student-athletes to the Mike Poehlein Invite on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and 29 to Wisconsin Lutheran for the Warrior Invite in Milwaukee.
"These are two good meets and there will be some good competition at both," said head coach Dave Uhrich. "The factor now is just trying to get some decent weather and post some good time and marks at the meets."
The Golden Eagles had great success in their opening outdoor meet of the season, the Saluki Spring Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., March 23-24. Eight competitors on the men's side, and seven from the women's, qualified for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, May 4-6, in Storrs, Conn. In addition, Michaela Courtney (5,000m), Carrie Schmid (pole vault), Tommy Schmitz (1,500m), Jeremy Williams (3,000m steeplechase) and Scott Mueller (5,000m) all captured first place in their events.
Tom Sage also finished first last weekend, in the decathlon, while competing at the Augustana College Opener in Rock Island, Ill.
The Warrior Invite is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. with the weather forecast calling for highs in the mid-50's with a 100 percent chance of rain. In West Lafayette, the field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT and running events at 11 a.m. There is 50 percent chance of rain with temperatures hovering around 70 degrees.
