TAMPA, Fla. - After a first round loss yesterday to South Florida, the Marquette men's tennis team bounced back today, defeating Georgetown, 4-1, in the consolation back draw of the BIG EAST Championships. The no. 6 seeded Golden Eagles will face the no. 4 seed DePaul. The Blue Demons defeated Marquette, 4-3, earlier this season on February 10 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
In doubles, Stephen Shao and Niko Boulieris took care of the Hoya tandem of Ted Tywang and David Tillem, 8-5, at the third position. The Golden Eagle pair of Trent Hagan and Pete Van Lieshout clinched the early point when they took down Will Lowell and Adam Gross, 8-6.
"Conditions were tough today," Hagan said. "It was more windy so we had to move our feet a lot more. We were all really intense in today's match and we were more vocal which helped each other get through. We had some pretty tight matches and it helps to have your teammates cheering you on."
In singles play, Boulieris had a convincing win over Robert Baggio at no. 5, 6-3, 6-2 while his doubles teammate Shao beat Lowell, 6-3, 6-4 at no. 2. The clinching point came from Hagan at no. 1 where he defeated Jeff Schnell, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
"Niko and Shao got off the court quickly in singles," assistant coach Raj Gill said. "The other matches were tight but we were able to pull through. We are trying to focus on tomorrow and the guys are looking forward to a rematch with DePaul."
With today's win, head coach Steve Rodecap earned his 100th career victory. His all time record is 100-88.
"I know we are all excited to play them again," Shao said of the rematch with DePaul. "We felt we should have won the match last time, so we get a chance to redeem ourselves. We are all ready to go and excited to come away with the win."
