Marquette Volleyball Falls to Texas-Arlington, 3-0

MILWAUKEE - In their second match of the day, the Marquette volleyball team (2-3) fell 3-0 (20-30, 29-31, 23-30) to the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in the final match of the 2007 Marquette Kick-Off.
Tournament MVP, Kim Todd finished the night with her fourth consecutive double-double, slamming 13 kills and collecting 13 digs. Senior middle blocker Jenn Brown exploded for a team-high 14 kills and .407 hitting percentage. Senior setter Katie Weidner posted her second double-double, dishing out 41 assists and tallying 10 digs.
"I was really impressed with Jenn Brown, she just elevated her game to the next level," head coach Pati Rolf said. "We had two great wins this weekend and then played a great team that beat us, and hopefully the kids learned from it. Hopefully they've taught us what a great small team can do if they really work together."
Teena Sobczak led the Mavericks (4-1) with a match-high 20 kills and collected 12 digs. Torie Dacus and Ellen Murray slammed 10 kills apiece.
Despite an early 5-4 lead in game one, Marquette struggled offensively and watched UTA go on an 18-6 run to take a 22-11 lead. The Golden Eagles would come as close as nine points, but could not regain a lead as the Mavericks earned the game one victory, 30-20.
Marquette regained their footing in game two, taking another early lead at 7-5, but UTA went on another offensive run to force an MU timeout with Marquette trailing 10-8. The Golden Eagles continued to stay close as a kill from Brown tied the score at 18, but MU could not take control. Brown came up strong offensively, connecting on her attempts as she helped get Marquette to a 28-28 tie. MU continued to pressure the Mavs forcing them into extra play, but could not take control and fell 31-29 in game two. Brown had six kills and a .625 hitting percentage in the second stanza.
The Golden Eagles could not extend the match and dropped the third and final game 23-30. A kill by freshman?Rabbecka Gonyo saw MU trail by one at 5-4 and they put pressure on the Mavs early, but could not take control. UTA went on a 12-6 run, for a 25-16 lead and the closest Marqutte would come was within eight points despite forcing UTA to attempt two match point tries.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7 as they head to Champaign Ill. to compete in the Illini State Farm Classic. They face Illinois at 7 p.m.
