The Marquette University men's tennis team will conclude action at the 2007 Ball State Fall Invitational Sunday with a chance to claim the championship in five of the event's six flights.
The Golden Eagles posted a 10-2 record in singles on Saturday and remained undefeated in doubles on the weekend, posting a 9-0 mark overall since Friday morning. As a result, MU owns at least one team in each of the three doubles flights and a Marquette player will battle for the title in two of the three singles flights.
Sophomore Dusan Medan will attempt to cap a perfect weekend against freshman Eduardo Pavia of Ball State in the championship match of Flight "A" singles. Medan earned a spot in the title contest with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Jarrod Epkey of host BSU in the semifinals.
Senior Pete Van Lieshout posted a pair of victories on Saturday in Flight "C" and will face Robert Stedman of Eastern Illinois for the title on Sunday morning. Van Lieshout opened the day with a tiebreaker win over Alfonso Monroy of Northern Illinois and followed it with a straight-set (6-2, 6-0) decision against Wilder Samson of Bradley.
The Flight "A" doubles bracket has already been won by Marquette, all that needs to be determined is which squad will walk away with bragging rights. Junior Stephen Shao and Van Lieshout will take on senior Brett Binkley and sophomore Mark Rutherford for the right to finish on top of the flight.
Medan and junior Trent Hagan are also in position to claim the championship in Flight "B" and sophomore Niko Boulieris and newcomer Graydon Klassen are in the same spot in Flight "C."
