Muncie, Ind. - The Marquette University men's tennis team capped a successful opening weekend at the Ball State Fall Invitational by capturing a trio of doubles titles Sunday morning.
The Golden Eagles swept the three doubles main draws and completed the three-day event undefeated as a squad in doubles play.
"For being the first event, I thought it was a very productive weekend," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We were able to play a number of matches and had a lot of guys in both the main and consolation finals."
Although it won't count in the season standings, senior Brett Binkley and sophomore Mark Rutherford captured the "A" flight title with an 8-4 victory over teammates Stephen Shao and Pete Van Lieshout.
The championship for Flight "B" doubles barely produced a sweat for Marquette's Trent Hagan and Dusan Medan, who defeated the Butler tandem of Brandon Bayliss and Sam Brown by a score of 8-0. Sophomore Niko Boulieris and freshman Graydon Klassen also had a relatively easy time of it in Flight "C," downing Sean Bush and Jeff Rutherford of Eastern Illinois, 8-1.
Both of MU's players competing for main draw titles on Sunday, came up just short in their efforts. Medan was up a break on two occasions in the first set, but eventually fell 7-6, 6-2 to Eduardo Pavia of Ball State in Flight "A." Van Lieshout also saw his championship bid fall by the wayside with a 6-1, 6-4, loss to Robert Stedman of Eastern Illinois.
Rutherford downed Binkley 6-3, 6-0 for the consolation title in Flight "B" and Klassen was victorious over Ben Shafer of Butler in the Flight "C" back draw, 6-1, 6-0.
Marquette will open the home portion of its 2007-08 campaign with weekend with the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, Sept. 21-23.
