Milwaukee -- The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams concluded play at the 32nd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by the Golden Eagles at Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wis., with singles and doubles action Sunday afternoon.
The men's team faced Wichita State in singles competition and DePaul in doubles play, while the women's squad competed against Texas A&M (doubles) and Wisconsin (singles).
Sophomore Dusan Medan completed his weekend 3-0 in singles play and as a result claimed the event's runner-up trophy. Senior Albert Ballesta of Wichita State was named the singles champion based on a point system that factored in results and head-to-head matchups.
Ball State's doubles tandem of Eduardo Pavia and Jorge Rodriguez topped the doubles standings while DePaul's Austin Doerner and Jose Moncada finished second. Moncada also earned the Mulcahy Award, which recognizes sportsmanship and is voted on by the on-court officials. Andrea Brenes of Alabama claimed the same honor on the women's side.
"Overall, I was really happy with our play in doubles," men's head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We feel like we have a number of options and can put three quality teams out there."
Marquette seniors Maria Calbeto and Shannon Brown dropped a tough 9-8 decision to Tiffany Clifford and Chrisi Liles of Texas A&M in a battle between the weekend's top two squads. The Aggie victory clinched the championship, while the Golden Eagle tandem earned second place.
