MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men and women's soccer programs will be thinking pink and showing their support of breast cancer awareness during their respective matches on Friday, Sept. 28.
In a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Valley Fields, the Marquette women, who are ranked as high as 12th in one national poll, will be wearing commemorative pink jerseys for their match against Providence at 6 p.m., while the MU men will warm-up in pink shirts prior to their match against Louisville, at 8 p.m. The women's match-worn jerseys will be auctioned off following the game.
"Friday night under the lights, a great night of BIG EAST soccer at Valley Fields and raising awareness for breast cancer," said head women's coach Markus Roeders. "I know the young ladies will wear their uniforms with pride, and we hope that our fans, families, the students and community will embrace this special evening."
Proceeds generated from donations, t-shirt sales and the pink jersey auction will benefit Kicks Against Cancer.
Kicks Against Cancer is American soccer's initiative to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer and to help women living with cancer to survive and thrive. The theme of the campaign is "Help Save the Women You Love."
In conjunction with Kicks Against Cancer, the Marquette soccer program started a Soccer Mom Camp last spring. Over 50 area women participated. Those women will be introduced prior to the men's game Friday evening as part of Soccer Mom Camp Reunion night.
"This is a fantastic night for each of us to celebrate the women in our lives," said associate men's head coach Stan Anderson. "Everyone know how important women are to us; our moms, grandmas, daughters, sisters, wives. Let's keep them healthy and help create awareness about this cause. Let's have a great time before, during and after these matches."
