Women's Tennis Completes Day One at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Marquette women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Sophomore Elly Strother, and freshman Christina Ruiz each picked up wins in the blue main draw.

In the blue singles draw, Ruiz earned a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Western Michigan's Amanda Moccia, while Strother downed host Michigan's Tanvi Dudhela in a tie-breaker, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (9) to advance in the main draw. Both were defeated in their second matches of the day as Strother fell to No. 2 seed Katie Potts of Notre Dame, 6-1, 6-3, and Ruiz fell to Pott's teammate, No. 1 seed Kali Krisik, 6-3, 6-0.

Ruiz will play Purdue's Alejandra Boeker, and Strother will face Western Michigan's Emily Dudzik in the blue consolation draw on Saturday.

Also in the blue singles draw, sophomore Maggie Wilson was defeated by Boeker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in her first match of the day, and fell short against Denise Ellison of Notre Dame in her second match, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6).

Senior Shannon Brown lost her first match of the day to Michigan's Denise Muresan, 6-0, 6-1, but rallied in the consolation draw and took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Purdue's Whitney Reys.

In the maize singles draw, senior Maria Calbeto, sophomore Kylie Moore and freshman Rachael Hush were defeated in each of their respective matches.

In doubles play, the duo of Brown and Calbeto defeated Denise Ellison and Bailey Louderback of Notre Dame, 8-2. Michigan's Chisako Sugiyama and Whitney Taney defeated freshman pair, Ruiz and Hush, 8-3.

The Golden Eagles will return to action at the Wolverine Invitational Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
