The Marquette men' and women's track team shook off its winter rust an had a stellar outing at the Iowa Hawkeye Open, held in the Recreation Building on the campus of the University of Iowa.
"This was a really good meet for us," head coach Bert Rogers said. "We broke off the rust that was still lingering from winter break. Our performances were a lot better. We're jumping higher and longer and running faster. This was an excellent trip for us."
On the women's side, freshman Katie McKenney placed third in the 400m dash, finishing in 1:00.28. Junior Sarah Verdoliva finished second in the 600m crossing the line in 1:37.30, while sophomore Katlin Millin was right behind her in fourth place with a 1:37.70.
Sophomore Anna Weber claimed the 3,000m with a time of 10:25.36.
In the jumps, the women had a successful day. The Golden Eagles claimed the top spots in the high jump as sophomore Erynn James and junior Lana Rabas finished in first and second with jumps of 1.7m and 1.66m respectively. Rabas' jump was good enough to qualify her to the BIG EAST Championship.
Junior Carrie Schmid surpassed her own school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.70m to win the event. Freshman Alyssa Davis placed third in the triple jump with 10.75m.
MU claimed the top three spots in the shotput as senior Jenna Mahaffey and sophomores Rachel Thiel and Kelly Corcoran had throws of 13.13m, 13.11m and 12.23m respectively. Mahaffey also finished second in the weight throw, throwing 16.25m.
On the men's side, sophomore Mark Kopecki claimed the mile run, crossing the line in 4:20.36. Freshman Mike McCarthy won the 800m with Kopecki in second with times of 1:57.56 and 1:58.54 respectively.
The men reigned supreme in the 3,000m as junior Scott Mueller, freshman Nick Szczech and senior Kyle Saginus claimed the top three spots. Mueller ran a 8:36.73, Szczech a 8:42.93 and Saginus finished in 8:49.74.
In his first meet of the season, senior Ray Bratchett, claimed the high jump, clearing a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 2.05m. Freshman Nick Byom tied for third with a jump of 1.95m.
Junior Shawn McLarney was third in the long jump with a jump of 6.77m
MU has now had 20 student-athletes qualify to the BIG EAST Championships in 25 events.
The Golden Eagles will head to Notre Dame, Ind. To compete in their first scored meet of the season. They will compete in the Notre Dame Quad meet on Jan. 25, 2008
