WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marquette women's volleyball team dropped Sunday's match to Georgetown, 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-23).
"Georgetown did one heck of a job," said head coach Pati Rolf. "They came out ready to go and they played without too many errors. Without the errors we could not capitalize the way we would have liked throughout the match."
Ashlee Fisher led the way for the Golden Eagles (7-10, 2-3 BIG EAST) with 10 kills while Caryn Mastandrea had 28 assists and Amy Deelo had 10 digs. Rabbecka Gonyo and Katie Vancura both had a career-high four solo blocks to help MU to 15.0 total blocks for the match.
Marquette got off to a 5-2 lead in the first set behind a couple of kills from Fisher and also led by three at 10-7. Marquette built a 16-14 lead before Georgetown took their largest lead of the set at 20-17. After Marquette tied the set at 21-21, Georgetown took a timeout to regroup, but a kill by Leslie Bielski forced the Hoyas into another timeout. MU sat at set-point with the score 24-22, but was unable to close out the set as GU scored three straight to win 26-24.
In the second, Marquette trailed early but rallied to tie the score at 6-6 on a kill by Gonyo. From there, neither team was able to pull away as the game was tied at every point from 6-6 to 13-13. Georgetown built a 20-18 lead and following two timeouts, MU was only able to manage another point, dropping the set 25-19.
A quick 8-2 start by the Hoyas forced Marquette into an early timeout. The Golden Eagles then reeled off 11 of the next 18 points to pull within two at 15-13, forcing a Georgetown timeout. Out of the timeout, MU scored two points to pull even at 15-15 and three straight points by GU lengthened their lead back to three at 18-15. MU would go on to score five of seven to tie the game at 20-20 before GU scored the final four points to take the set 25-23.
Marquette returns to action this Saturday at the Al McGuire Center when they host Syracuse (11-9, 4-1 BIG EAST), before playing cross-town rival UW-Milwaukee (14-5, 7-1 Horizon) on Monday. MU's match against UW-Milwaukee will be televised locally on a tape-delay basis by Time Warner Cable Sports, Channel 32.
