Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's basketball program has landed one of the top point guards in the country, Junior Cadougan, to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Buzz Williams announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cadougan, a 6-1, 195-pounder, will arrive on campus this summer and have four years of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
"As I have said before, we want to recruit really good players, who have the ability to pass, dribble, and shoot and display a level of toughness that is evident on both ends of the court on every possession," Williams said. "Having said that, I think it is absolutely critical to have a true point guard who can lead your team from opening tip to the final buzzer and I have great confidence that we have found that in this class, with Junior."
A consensus top-75 player by nationally recognized recruiting services, Cadougan is currently ranked 12th by HoopScoopOnline.com, 27th by Hoopmasters.com, 50th by Scout.com (5th-best point guard), 60th by Rivals.com and owns the 65th position in the ESPNU.com 100.
A preseason all-area selection in Houston entering the 2008-09 season at Christian Life Center Academy in Humble, Texas, Cadougan averaged 21.0 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game as a junior under head coach Carlos Wilson. He helped the team to an overall record of 32-10.
"We are extremely happy with Junior's commitment to Marquette," Wilson said. "From day one we felt it was the best fit for his skill set as a basketball player, as well as the best fit for him a person. Junior is the ultimate competitor and a player you want to have the ball with the game on the line. His instincts allow him to balance when the team needs him to score and when he needs to get his teammates involved, which is a special dimension for a point guard."
The Cougars finished the year 42-8 in 2006-07 and Cadougan chipped in 18.0 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals per contest as a sophomore.
"Junior has been on the scene since he was a freshman and has played at a national level, not only in high school, but also on the AAU circuit," Williams said. "He has had a very high level of success in both, with coach Wilson at Christian Life and coach Russell with Grassroots Canada and we anticipate that to continue once he arrives here. With a class this large, distinguishing what their roles will be, will take time to evolve, but I can assure you, that Junior already knows his and he will be able to fill that role from day No. 1!"
The Toronto, Ontario, native played at Community Christian High School in Stockbridge, Ga,, as a freshman and was named to the all-underclassmen team by USA Today after averaging 18.8 points per game.
Cadougan has also compiled an impressive career on the AAU circuit, competing primarily for Grassroots Canada under head coach Ro Russell. His team's highlights included championships at the adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas and at the NBA Players Association Top-100 Camp.
He averaged 23.0 points, 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in the eight games at the adidas Super 64, including a 22-point effort in the championship game. Cadougan was named the top playmaker at the NBA camp and was also tabbed to the All-Create Team at the 2008 Reebok All-American Camp.
