MILWAUKEE - After a weeklong hiatus, the Marquette women's tennis team will travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on BIG EAST conference foes Connecticut and Providence Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. ET, respectively.
The Huskies (5-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) have won four consecutive matches, including two 7-0 sweeps of Valparaiso and Rhode Island. Led by sophomore Allison Campitiello (6-0 dual, 12-1 overall) and freshman Emily Herb (5-2, 14-6) on the singles side, and the duos of Campiteiello-Jessica Porter (4-0) and Megan Doran-Alison Koch (5-0), Connecticut will take on eight consecutive BIG EAST opponents after only playing Syracuse in the first half of their season. In last season's BIG EAST match against the Huskies, the Golden Eagles dominated play, securing a 7-0 decision.
Providence (6-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) enters play against MU on a five-match losing streak, falling to Seton Hall, Army, Marist, Sacred Heart, and Fairfield. In those five losses the Friars won just five total points. Of the Friars' 13 active singles players this season, only five hold records better than .500. In doubles results, only the teams of Danaber-Kenaga and McDevitt-Sinba boast winning records.
After winning five straight, the Golden Eagles (7-11, 2-1 BIG EAST) have dropped four of their last five matches. In a three-match road trip during spring break, MU was swept by No. 14 Arizona State in Mesa, Ariz. Beba Calbeto and Shannon Brown played the No. 40 ranked pair of Nadia and Laila Abdala close in the No. 1 doubles position, but eventually fell 8-6.
MU earned a 5-2 victory over Texas-Arlington last weekend with freshman Elly Strother securing the match point. The duos of Maria Calbeto-Shannon Brown and Erin Watkins-Rachael Hush and Calbeto, Strother, and Brown all walked away with wins.
In most recent action, Marquette was tripped-up by North Texas 4-3. The Golden Eagles swept doubles competition, but only Calbeto and Brown were able to post wins in singles play.
