MU Completes Saturday Competition At Lee Calhoun Memorial

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University had a number of quality performances Saturday in Macomb, Ill. from a limited track and field squad, consisting primarily of throwers, at the Lee Calhoun Memorial hosted by Western Illinois.
"It was cold, wet conditions, but really pulled off some good performances," said associate head coach and throws coach Mike Koenning. "I thought we competed well, and we got a lot of good experience out of it."
Jenna Mahaffey posted three top-three finishes, including a throw of 44.89m (147-03) to win the discus. Mahaffey also placed second in the shot put with a mark of 12.72m (41-08.75) and third in the hammer throw with a toss of 49.45m (162-03).
MU's only other event winner was sophomore Kelly Magennis who hit a mark of 35.83m (117-07) in the javelin. Jessica Ehlen recorded a pair of runner-up finishes with a throws of 42.79m (140-05) in the discus and 49.94m (163-10) in the hammer throw.
Golden Eagles freshman Robert Bleem posted a BIG EAST qualifying mark in the discus with a throw of 42.75m (140-03). Bleem also placed third in the javelin at 51.23m (163-01).
Additionally, John Kusowski barely missed becoming a BIG EAST qualifier when he crushed his personal record in the hammer throw with his throw Saturday of 47.76m (156-08).
Marquette will head to Iowa City, Iowa for the Iowa Invitational on April 19. The Golden Eagles return to the "Hawkeye State" for one of the largest and most popular track and field meets in the country, the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, which begins April 24.
