Tampa - The No. 4 seed Marquette University men's tennis team (16-7) reversed its fortunes Saturday afternoon at the 2008 BIG EAST Championship in Tampa, Fla., downing Villanova 4-0 in tournament action.
The Golden Eagles, who were defeated by DePaul 4-0 on Friday afternoon, will now face St. John's Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. The winner of that matchup earns fifth place in the nine-team field, a position MU claimed in 2007. MU and STJ did not meet during the regular season.
Marquette opened the match by claiming the doubles point, earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. MU's dominance continued into singles action, where junior Trent Hagan quickly dispatched of Villanova's Dimitri Chimerakis 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Dusan Medan was next with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot. Senior Brett Binkley, inserted into the lineup on Saturday, responded with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 to claim the fourth and final point.
The Golden Eagles had dropped just one set in singles play when the match was called after the fourth point was clinched.
