[11:14 p.m.] Jerel McNeal, the program's all-time leading scorer, sent an update via text message during the game agains UMES that he will be headed to Belgium on Wednesday to begin his professional career.
Television Replays: Sports32 will air Tuesday's game on Wednesday at 1 p.m., Thursday at 9 a.m., Friday at 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m. All times are Central time.
Marquette-Maryland Eastern Shore Postgame Notes
- Series History: Marquette leads 1-0
- Senior Lazar Hayward scored a career-high 28 points, moving him past Jim McIlvaine on the MU scoring list and into 26th place with 1,280 points. Hayward tied McIlvaine in the MU record book with his one-handed dunk late in the second half. The next player Hayward will pass is Dwyane Wade with 1,281 career points.
- Junior Jimmy Butler sank the first 3-pointer of his career in the second half and added two more before the end of the game. In 2008-09, Butler scored 95.9 percent of his points from either the free throw line or in the paint and missed all four of his 3-point attempts.
- Senior guard David Cubillan tied a career-high with six assists. Cubillan ended the game with 12 points and only one turnover.
- Sophomore center Chris Otule scored his first points of the season early in the first half after checking in for freshman Jeronne Maymon. Otule scored a career-high six points.
- After making only three 3-pointers Friday evening in the season opener, Marquette responded in the first half against Maryland Eastern Shore by hitting 6-of-16, including two from junior college-transfer Dwight Buycks. For the game, the Golden Eagles were 10-of-26 from long range, with a team-high three coming from Butler
- Six Marquette players hit a 3-pointer Tuesday evening. The highest number of players that MU had hit a trey in 2008-09 was five, which was done four times, most recently against No. 2 Connecticut on Feb. 25, 2009.
