MILWAUKEE - With a team cumulative grade point average of 3.165 for the 2008-09 academic year, the Marquette women's soccer team was named a NSCAA College Team Academic Award Winner. It is the 14th consecutive season the Golden Eagles have earned the honor.
"Our team continues to excel in the classroom, on the field and in the community," said BIG EAST Coach of the Year Markus Roeders. "We are proud of their efforts and the work they put forth to be outstanding students. As much as we want them to be champions on the field, their main objective is to be excellent students and earn a degree from Marquette."
Individually, senior defender Katie Miller and senior midfielder Kelly Wepking were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Five team presented by ESPN the Magazine earlier this month. Miller was a first team selection, while Wepking earned second team honors
Following the 2008-09 academic year, 15 members of the women's soccer team were named to the BIG EAST Academic Team.
The Golden Eagles finished the 2009 season 15-5-3 overall and made the program's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Marquette won its first-ever BIG EAST Conference American Division Championship. Behind the No. 1 American Division seed, the Golden Eagles advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Tournament. MU started league play 1-2-1 before going on a seven-game unbeaten streak that included six wins, en route to the regular season title.
In the final regular season national polls, the Golden Eagles finished the season ranked No. 25 by the NSCAA, No. 10 by Soccer America and No. 21 by Soccer Times.
