Quintet Named to NSCAA Scholar All-Central Region Team

MILWAUKEE - Five members of the Marquette women's soccer team were recognized for their outstanding work on the pitch as well as in the classroom by being named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/ adidas Scholar All-Central Region Team. Seniors Katie Miller and Allison McBride earned first team honors, senior Michelle Compty was a second team selection, junior Rosie Malone-Povolny was a third team selection and senior Kelly Wepking earned honorable mention honors.
"Alli, Katie, Rosie, Kelly and Michelle have excelled in the classroom and on the field throughout their years at Marquette," said BIG EAST Coach of the Year Markus Roeders. "These honors highlight their commitment to excellence as student-athletes. They strive to be the very best on the field and in the classroom. We are very proud of them and wish our seniors continued success. We know they will continue to excel throughout their future endeavors."
Miller, a double major in marketing and human resources with an overall grade-point average of 3.98, and McBride, a nursing major with a 3.6 GPA, were integral members of the Golden Eagle defense that posted a single-season record 16 shutouts. Both Miller and McBride started in all 23 contests and were NSCAA Scholar All-Central Region selections in 2008.
Compty, majoring in exercise science/physical therapy with an overall grade-point average of 3.40, started in all 23 games. She finished the 2009 campaign with one goal. Malone-Povolny also started in all 23 matches and amassed three points on one goal and one assist for the season. Malone-Povolny is an English and secondary education major, and holds a 3.81 cumulative grade point average.
Wepking, a biomedical sciences/pre-med major, holds a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average and is one of 14 players who tallied a goal in 2009.
The Golden Eagles finished the 2009 season 15-5-3 overall and made the program's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Behind the No. 1 American Division seed, the Golden Eagles advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Tournament. MU started league play 1-2-1 before going on a seven-game unbeaten streak that included six wins, en route to its first-ever BIG EAST Conference American Division Championship.
In the final regular season national polls, the Golden Eagles finished the season ranked No. 25 by the NSCAA, No. 10 by Soccer America and No. 21 by Soccer Times.
