The Golden Eagles will commence BIG EAST Conference play Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center against No. 20/19 Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (8-4) return to action following a seven-day break for the Christmas holiday. In its last time out, Marquette handled Canisius, 63-32, at the Al McGuire Center. The 32 points was the fewest MU has allowed since it beat Toledo 67-28 on Nov. 24, 2004. The Golden Eagles held Canisius to only three points through the first 14:18 of the game.
Sophomore Jessica Pachko, who was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll Monday, registered her first double-double of season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Canisius while making 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Pachko is second on the team with 10.0 points per game, and leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average ranks 17th in the BIG?EAST, and stands 12th in the BIG?EAST in free throw percentage making 80.0 percent of her attempts.
Junior guard Angel Robinson, who leads the team with 11.0 points per game, is closing in on the 1,000 point plateau. Robinson is 10 points shy of becoming the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points in her career.
Meanwhile, the Panthers (5-5) enter the game with Marquette following a 51-38 loss to Illinois State on Dec. 15 at the Klotsche Center. A pair of Panthers are averaging double-figure points, led by Lindsay Laur with 13.2 ppg and Ashley Imperiale with 10.7 ppg.
Marquette is 23-19 all-time against the Panthers in a series that commenced in 1976. The Panthers claimed the last win on Dec. 31, 2009, 63-62 at the Al McGuire Center. Head coach Terri Mitchell is 11-1 all-time against UWM.
