Former MU Runner Tommy Schmitz Helps Distance Medley Relay Squad To USA Indoor Championship

BOSTON -- Former Marquette University track standout Tommy Schmitz helped the Wisconsin Runner Racing Team capture gold in the distance medley at the 2009 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Sunday evening in Boston.
"I am happy for Tommy and his success this year," said Marquette track and field head coach Bert Rogers. "It is always exciting to see an MU alum professionally competing at a high level and having success."
Schmitz, who set the MU record in the outdoor 1,500 meter run in 2007, ran the final leg of the relay to help the squad record the only sub-10 minute time in the event at 9:48.06.
In the 1,500, Schmitz finished eighth with a time of 3:49.01.
Earlier this year, Schmitz just missed recording a sub-four minute mile with a time of 4:00.96 at the University of Washington Invitational on Jan. 31. No MU student-athlete has ever run a mile in under four minutes in NCAA competition.
The concluding event of USATF's Indoor Visa Championship Series, the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships is the world's oldest indoor track championship, with the first meet being held in 1888 in New York.
