MILWAUKEE - Marquette University junior outside hitter Ashley Beyer was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career Monday afternoon after helping the Golden Eagles to wins at DePaul and Notre Dame over the weekend.
Beyer notched double-doubles in both matches, collecting 16 kills and 13 digs in the 3-1 win over DePaul on Saturday, before closing out the weekend with 21 kills and 14 digs in Sunday's five-set win over Notre Dame. The win over the Irish marked only the eighth time since 1995 that the Irish have been defeated on their home court by a member of the BIG EAST.
The Bloomington, Ill.-native averaged 4.11 kills and 3.00 digs over the weekend as the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to eight games overall and six straight on the road. MU currently sits in fourth place in the BIG EAST with a 6-2 league record (15-7 overall) and is a perfect 6-0 with Beyer on the court.
It is the first BIG EAST Player of the Week honor for Beyer, who has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times this season, most recently on Oct. 18 after wins at Green Bay and Syracuse.
Kim Todd was the last Marquette player to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week honors for women's volleyball when she did so on Oct. 8, 2007.
Beyer and the rest of the Golden Eagles return to action Friday at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m. against West Virginia before a Halloween match with Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will feature a post-match clinic and free Pizza Hut pizza for all students in attendance. All students at Sunday's match will also be eligible to win an iPad during a costume contest between sets two and three.
