MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's soccer team continued its domination in spring season action with wins over DePaul and Wisconsin on a windy Saturday at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles shutout the Blue Demons, 5-0, and topped the Badgers, 2-1, to improve to 5-0-1 overall in the spring.
Four different Golden Eagles scored goals, led by two apiece from juniors Ashley Bares and Lauren Acree, and freshman Rachel Brown.
"It was a good day for our team at Valley Fields," said head coach Markus Roeders. "We performed and executed our chances well for most of the day. Finding consistency is part of what our team is working on and the entire team is contributing toward that goal. It was nice to see how we keep creating and scoring goals. The windy conditions were an added challenge, but we mastered the elements well."
Marquette scored two of its five goals against DePaul in the first, with Brown accounting for both of those in the first 15:30 of the game.
Acree and sophomore Rachael Sloan set up Brown's first goal at the 10:56 mark, and junior Stephanie Vasos served in a corner kick, which Brown headed in to put Marquette ahead, 2-0, in the 16th minute.
The Golden Eagles continued their attack in the second half. Junior Rosie Malone-Povolny struck first at the 39:03 mark, while Bares scored twice at the 42:07 and 44:45 marks to help MU cruise to the victory.
For the game, Marquette owned a 10-5 shots advantage, and sophomore keeper Natalie Kulla was credited with two saves.
"For us to score five goals in the first 45 minutes against a quality DePaul squad is excellent and shows our efficiency is our attacking," said Roeders.
The Golden Eagles trailed for the first time this season against Wisconsin as the Badgers scored just over three minutes into the game.
Following the goal, the Golden Eagles quickly went into attack mode and possessed the ball the majority of the first half of play.
Acree scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute. Sloan found Acree inside the 18-yard mark and directed her shot to the low far corner past the Badgers' keeper.
The Golden Eagles held a 9-2 shots advantage in the first half, 12-5 for the game.
Acree struck again and netted the game winner at the 62:49 mark. Malone-Povolny collected a Wisconsin turnover and dished the ball off to Acree from about 14 yards out. Acree scored her second goal the same way as her first; low-to-the-ground, far post out of reach for UW's keeper.
"Although we allowed an early goal against Wisconsin, give our team credit for battling back and winning the game at the end. Our best soccer was played during the first half of the Wisconsin match. Great possession, building the attack, creating chances, it was fun to watch. I am glad we had to play from behind because it creates a difference mind-set. Wisconsin also played more physical than any other team we played against this spring, which was a good practice for our team. Overall, it was a great day and we showed improvements in all elements of our game. The team is excited to finish the spring season next weekend at Illinois against the Illini and Purdue," said Roeders.
The Golden Eagles will wrap-up their spring season Saturday in Champaign, Ill., against Illinois and Purdue.
