The celebration and jubilation associated with "Championship Friday" at MU's Session II Day Camp was evident before the participants even entered the Al McGuire Center as members of the men's basketball team hosted an impromptu dance competition.
Still euphoric after the selection of former teammate Lazar Hayward in Thursday's NBA Draft, the Golden Eagles set the competition standard for the day by demanding dance moves from the campers before their parents could even speed away for a final day of freedom.
The four divisional tournament champions were literally determined at the exact same time and there was plenty of excitement on each of the courts. Team USA concluded the week undefeated, earning the regular season title in addition to the tourney crown in convincing fashion. Los Angeles claimed a pair of rings as well in the NBA division, although not without controversy. An unnamed source with another league program suggested that Los Angeles' head coach Joe Chapman may be under investigation for tampering.
The real dramatics came down to the NCAA and BIG EAST divisions. Memphis, the regular season champion, held on for a two-point win over Texas after stealing an inbounds pass in the closing seconds. Marquette collected an emotional overtime victory against surprising Cincinnati in the title matchup. In a sudden-death format, Mitchell Kwapick grabbed a key offensive rebound following a missed free throw, brought the ball back out and crossed over his defender before calmly draining a 15-foot jumper.
Calvin Williams, oldest son of head coach Buzz Williams, was able to win a cornucopia of prizes for fellow Olympic Village member James Matthews. Williams name was selected for the "BUZZer Beater" shot and he banked in a basket as his three-second limit expired.
