MILWAUKEE - In anticipation of the 2010 Marquette women's soccer season, GoMarquette.com breakdowns the team position by position. Today's preview is the Golden Eagles' defense. The midfield and forwards will be previewed Friday.
The Golden Eagles open their season Friday, Aug. 20 against Idaho State at Valley Fields at 7:30 p.m.
Defense has always been a trademark of the Marquette women's soccer team, which won't change in 2010. The Golden Eagles stifled their opponents to record a league-best 16 shutouts in 2009, but repeating that feat won't be an easy task as the Golden Eagles have to replace defensive mainstays Katie Miller and Allison McBride.
However, Roeders doesn't seem too worried as seniors Lauren Thut and Stephanie Vasos, junior Kerry McBride and sophomore Ally Miller, all integral members of MU's backline in 2009, return to anchor the defense.
The backline was able to contribute to the Golden Eagles' offensive attack, as three of MU's top seven goal scorers were defenders. Thut ranked third on the team in points with two goals and four assists. McBride also got involved with one goal and two assists, while Vasos, one of MU's corner kick specialists, contributed two goals in 2009.
Ally Miller, an All-BIG EAST Rookie Team selection in 2009, started in 17 straight games before being sidelined with a foot injury. When healthy she is able to cover a lot of space, proving productive in the stopper role during her rookie campaign.
Katie Hishmeh, who didn't see action in 2009, made tremendous strides in the spring and summer and will see plentiful minutes in 2010.
As for MU's reserves, freshman Emily Jacobson showed she is ready to contribute when called upon after a remarkable preseason training camp. Erin Tedesco and Emily Janecek also look to be in the mix to give the Golden Eagles more options with its defensive shape.
