COLUMBUS, Ohio -
The No. RV/22 Marquette women's soccer team and Ohio State battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. Sophomore Lisa Philbin scored MU's lone goal in the 79th minute. The tie puts Marquette at 1-0-1 overall, while Ohio State moves to 0-1-1.
"Two good teams battled to a draw today," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Momentum built throughout the game and it got better as time ran off the clock. We liked some of our possession play, but against good teams we have to be more threatening. Ohio State is a tough team and we learned and got better by playing them. Midfield and offensive play always takes longer to develop and considering the season is still very young, we expect to be more consistent as the season progresses. Overall, it is a fair result and we will build on this game to get better for next weekend."
The Golden Eagles and the Buckeyes seemed to struggle generating their offensive attack in the first half as both teams were only able to register one shot.
The Golden Eagles pushed early in the second half as Ashley Bares put her shot on target in the 48th minute and Julia Victor launched one that went wide in the 50th minute. Rachel Brown had an opportunity to get Marquette on the board in the 60th minute, but Buckeyes' keeper Katie Baumgardner was there to stop it.
After Philbin was inserted back in the game at the 68:20 mark, she and Victor connected to give Marquette the 1-0 lead at the 78:51 mark. Philbin tried to give MU another goal in the 82nd minute, but her header was blocked.
"Lisa gave us the spark we were looking for and we couldn't be happier that she scored. It has been a tough road for her physically and mentally and her goal is a reward well deserved," said Roeders.
Aly Walker scored the equalizer for Ohio State at the 83:46 mark. Tiffany Cameron found Walker on the run who knocked it in past Natalie Kulla.
Following OSU's game-tying strike, both teams pressured through the end of regulation. Both Rachael Sloan and Taylor Madigan had great looks at the goal but their shots were blocked. Madigan had another opportunity to put away the game winner 14 seconds into the first overtime, but Baumgardner denied her attempt.
It was much of the same in the second overtime period as Lauren Acree and Brown were unable to convert their chances.
For the game, the Buckeyes had the upper hand in the shots column, owning a 14-11 advantage, but Marquette proved more effective with its shot selection putting five on goal. Kulla played all 110 minutes and made three saves.
"Our defensive effort was good and Natalie came up big a couple times. She was outstanding and will definitely win us some games this year," said Roeders.
The Golden Eagles return home to host the 11th annual MKE Cup at Valley Fields Friday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 29. Marquette will play Auburn on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and New Mexico on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
