MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads return to action Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames, Iowa. The meet at the Lied Recreation Center is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. with the men's weight throw and conclude following the women's 1,600-meter relay around 4 p.m.
Teams competing this weekend include meet-host Iowa State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Minnesota (men only) and Southern Methodist (women only).
Freshman Sarah Ball will get her first shot at the 800-meter run this weekend after having set the freshman record in the 600 earlier this season. The Kenosha, Wis., native's personal best in the 600 (1:36.47) is the fifth-best mark in school history.
Mllwaukee-native Chanel Franklin will get another shot to qualify for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in the 200-meter dash after coming just short in her victory at the Notre Dame Blue and Gold Invitational (25.62 seconds) on Dec. 3. Franklin currently is fifth on the MU top-10 list in the 200.
Lauren Darnall will look for her fourth-straight pole vault title as the junior has captured first place in all three of MU's meets this season. Darnall is the school record holder at 12 feet, 8 3/4 inches, a mark set on Dec. 3 at Notre Dame, and will attempt to become the first MU student-athlete to break the 13-foot barrier. The Hanover, N.H., native had three very good attempts at 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches (4 meters) in the dual meet on Jan. 22 at Milwaukee.
Freshman Abby Croft reached a BIG EAST height of 11 feet, 1 3/4 inches (3.40 meters) in the pole vault at Milwaukee and will also compete this weekend.
In the women's 400 meters, junior Stephanie Grant will attempt to move up from her No. 2 ranking on MU's all-time list and take over the top spot. Grant won the 300 at Milwaukee and will be running the 400 for the first time this season.
The women's weight throw will see senior Jamie Roth look to continue her rise up the top-10 list in that event and will be joined by freshmen Kristen Gaffey, Kathryn Koeck and Kirsten Walker. The freshman trio will also compete in the shot put, where Gaffey will look to improve on her No. 7 spot in the MU record books.
High jumpers Cheldon Brown and Michael Saindon were engaged in a three-way jump-off last weekend at Milwaukee with Saindon coming out victorious. The duo will both focus solely on the high jump after competing in recent weeks in the long and triple jumps.
After running a time of 4:11.05 in the mile at Milwaukee, junior Jack Hackett will look shave 10 seconds off his personal best in the 3,000-meter run and qualify for the conference meet. Hackett will be joined by sophomore Spencer Agnew, the No. 7 MU athlete all-time in the event, and junior Blake Johnson, among others.
Hackett's high school teammate Evan Ross also competed in the mile last weekend and finished as runner-up (4:17.47) to Hackett. Ross will get another shot to lower his time in the mile this weekend.
Senior Joseph Kohut and junior David Carbajal will compete in the shot put while Robert Bleem will join Carbajal in the weight throw. Carbajal notched a personal best by over seven feet at Milwaukee, whereas Bleem has yet to record a mark this year. Bleem's throws thus far have had the distance to qualify him for the BIG EAST meet, but he has fouled on each of his throws.
Sophomore Kyle Winter will run the 800 for the first time this year. He currently sits less than a second out of the top-10 in MU history in the event with a time of 1:53.34 seconds.
