MILWAUKEE -The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams return to action Thursday, May 10-Friday, May 11 in a pair of last-chance meets at the Dr. Keeler Invitational and the Cardinal Twilight.
"We are focused on improving our marks in several events this weekend," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "We were expecting better marks in a few events at the BIG EAST Championships, and are now in the position to chase them this weekend. There looks to be nice conditions and competition at both Louisville and North Central, so now is the time to get it done."
The Golden Eagles primary focus is moving individuals up the NCAA Division I descending order list for the West Region, where the top 48 declarations qualify for the West Preliminary Rounds of the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The West Preliminary Rounds are set for May 24-28 in Austin, Texas.
Those competing at Louisville looking to solidify their spot in the NCAA preliminary rounds are seniors Tyler O'Brien (51st) and Jonathan Kusowski (65th) in the 200-meter dash and the hammer throw, respectively. Junior Kyle Winter (61st) will also look to better his season's best mark of 1:50.41 in the 800-meter run recorded last Saturday at the BIG EAST Championships. Kathryn Koeck (61st) and Samantha Kennedy (66th) will also look to move up the descending order list in the women's hammer throw.
Senior Blake Johnson, who currently ranks 49th in the West in the 10,000-meter run, will compete at the Dr. Keeler Invitational along with Jack Hackett in the 10k and a group of 13 other Marquette student-athletes.
The Dr. Keeler Invitational, held by North Central College in Naperville, Ill., at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, begins Thursday at 12:15 p.m. with the men's hammer and discus throws. The 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs will be the lone running events competed on Thursday beginning at 7:30 p.m. Action resumes Friday at 3 p.m. in the field with events on the track beginning with the men's 4x800-meter relay at 4 p.m.
Events at the University of Louisville's Cardinal Park begin Friday at 9 a.m. Central time with the throwing events, while field events begin at 10:30 a.m. CT and action on the track commences at 4 p.m. CT.
