MU Tops Providence, 2-0 in BIG EAST Quarterfinal

The No. 4 seed Golden Eagles scored a goal in each half to dispatch the No. 5 seed Friars to clinch a date with No. 1 seed DePaul this Friday in Jamaica, New York.
Sophomore Darian Powell added her fourth goal in the past five matches, while Haley Fritzlen, who assisted on Powell's score, added Marquette's second tally early in the second half. Powell put MU on the board in the 17th minute after Fritzlen played the ball to her from inside the box. Fritzlen registered her second goal of the season off a cornerkick assist from Jacie Jermier in 47th minute.
Powell's score was her team-high seventh goal of the season.
Marquette claimed an early lead, and never looked back against PC. The Golden Eagles claimed the final shot tally, outshooting their opponent 13 to seven. The Golden Eagles also won the cornerkick battle five to four.
Junior goalkeeper Amanda Engel picked up a pair of saves, and collected her eighth clean sheet of the season.
Leading 1-0 at the end of the initial 45 minutes of action, the Golden Eagles held a six to three advantage in shots at the half, while Providence held the edge in cornerkicks at three to two.
In the first stanza, Providence had a pair of free kicks that resulted in two great looks on the offensive end. In the 23rd minute, after a Marquette foul, PC's Catherine Zimmerman teed up a free kick from just outside the box. Marquette's Engel made a fine play to shut down the attempt, collecting her first and only save of the half. Again in the 33rd minute, the Friars were granted a free kick from just outside the box but the shot deflected off the Marquette wall and the score remained 1-0.
Marquette has now defeated Providence in five-consecutive matches, outscoring the Friars 20-0.
With Tuesday's victory, head coach Markus Roeders has now led the Golden Eagles to at least 10 victories in all 19 of his seasons at the helm.
The Golden Eagles return to action this Friday, Nov. 7 when they take on the DePaul Blue Demons on the campus of St. John's University in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals.
