The Marquette University men's tennis team opened play at the 2015 ITA Midwest Regional on Thursday with qualifying singles competition in South Bend, Ind.
Four players were in action for Marquette at the event, which is hosted by Notre Dame. The MU quartet opened the tourney hoping to claim the three wins necessary to earn a spot in Friday's main draw.
While senior Gleb Sklyr, junior Nick Dykema and sophomore Andre Romanello were all able to win their respective opening matches, only Sklyr remains in position to advance. The Ramat-Gan, Israel native opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UND's Nathan Griffin, who was seeded 13th in the draw, before downing Wisconsin's Alan Sweet, 7-6, 6-3.
"Overall it was a good day and probably the best one we have had today from a competition side," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Gleb had an outstanding day and is playing some really good tennis. I was really happy with how hard he competed."
Junior Mackenzie Stearns fell in his opening match and senior Daniel Fernandez and freshman Alvaro Verdu were already placed in the main draw and will begin play on Friday.
Marquette also has a trio of doubles teams that will begin main draw action on Friday afternoon.
