The Marquette University men's tennis team (5-6) dropped a 5-2 decision to Green Bay (8-3) Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The defeat snapped MU's 20-match homecourt winning streak, which dated back to the end of the 2012-13 campaign and included a perfect 11-0 mark in 2013-14.
The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles point in thrilling fashion. The point came down to the No. 2 spot after Green Bay won 6-3 at No. 3 and the MU tandem of senior Vukasin Teofanovic and junior Daniel Fernandez held on for a 6-4 decision at No. 1. Marquette's Nick Dykema and Kristiyan Trukov trailed throughout their match before taking a 6-5 lead. GB kept battling, however, and forced the match to a tiebreaker. Fortunately, the Golden Eagle duo was able to jump out to a quick advantage and never looked back en route to the win.
Trukov moved MU ahead 2-0, but the Phoenix quickly responded with wins of their own at No. 3 and No. 6. Green Bay clinched the team victory with a narrow 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4.
Marquette returns to action on Thursday, March 5 when the squad hosts Northern Illinois at 6 p.m.
